Indian IT and Digital Media company, Cressanda Solutions, has signed a deal with Eastern Railways Division of Indian Railways to provide on-board WiFi, IT solutions and digital media and advertising services to more than 500 trains. The contract is valid for five years. However, the value of the agreement has not been revealed.

According to local press reports, Cressanda has won the rights to advertise on the interior and exterior surfaces of over 500 Mail, Express, Premium, Inter-city and Local trains. Eastern Railways covers some 2,848km of track and operates services covering Howrah, Malda Town, Sealdah, Asansol, Kolkata, Durgapur, Barddhaman, Rampurhat Junction, Bhagalpur, Jasidih, Bandel and Naihati. It also runs India's oldest train, the Kalka Mail.

Besides offering on-board passenger Internet access and video on demand services, the supplier will also provide “concierge”services”. These will include enabling wheel-chair passengers to access the trains. Cressanda says it is developing a “Super App” to cover all of its services and is negotiating for access to international film and TV content that can be dubbed into local languages.

Company MD, Arun Kumar Tyagi, said “This project will not only connect with rural India but will also create job opportunities there. As part of our social commitment to make our Country stronger, we will be contributing towards socio-economic development of interior India.”

Cressanda is currently in the midst of supplying in-coach digital advertising services to the Kolkata Metro, where it is installing LED screens and will stream content in all coaches of the Metro. It will also provide free WiFi at Metro Stations and on the trains.
