Passengera to Launch On-board WiFi on Local Train Service in Italy

Friday 12 Jul 2024

Arenaways, an Italian private operator renowned for its innovative approach to train travel, has announced the planned launch of an infotainment system and on-board WiFi on their new trains in collaboration with Czech-based supplier Passengera. In doing so, it will become the first non-high-speed train operator in Italy to offer passengers free WiFi on its trains.

Arenaways, which was the first private train service to compete with Trenitalia, runs its red and yellow trains between the northern Italian cities of Milan and Turin. Since its launch in 2010 the operator gained fame for its innovative offerings – these included on-board shopping, shoe-cleaning and the opportunity for commuters to drop off their laundry in the morning and collect it on their return in the evening.

The new contract with Passengera includes the delivery of digital services, such as on-board internet connectivity and passenger infotainment. In March of this year, Arenaways was awarded a further contract to operate two railway lines in Piedmont for 10 years, commencing in January 2025.

Matteo Arena, CEO of Arenaways Longitude Holding, commented “We are an Italian private operator with an ambitious mission to redefine the train travel experience by also approaching the local connections with criteria of innovation and quality. We chose Passengera innovative infotainment system because it does allow to properly connect, entertain and provide real-time information to passengers throughout their journey, whilst exploring the exciting landmarks and activities available along the route. Fulfilling our "Rail different" philosophy, for the first time local connections will offer free WiFi and infotainment - usually a privilege of high-speed trains.”

Passengera points out that its modular software platform will offer a passengers a comprehensive suite of features – including free WiFi and infotainment on local connections. The system will also provide real-time route information, local weather forecasts, interactive maps, and detailed station pages. The entertainment section will offer multiple types of media such as movies, books, audiobooks or games.

This year’s WiFi on Trains Conference – Traincomms 2024, will take place on the 13th and 14th of November at the Royal Horseguards Hotel, London.
