Nomad Launches New Trackside Network in the US

Friday 20 Sep 2024

On-board service provider and part of the Alstom Group, Nomad Digital, has launched its dedicated, full-coverage trackside network on the West Coast of the USA.

Back in December 2022, the company won the contract to build a dedicated Trackside Radio Network for Caltrain, on the operator’s newly electrified line from San Francisco to San Jose. The route serves commuters in California travelling to and from Silicon Valley and is home to arguably one of the most hard-to-please set of travellers anywhere in the World, at least when it comes WiFi services.

The Nomad network, which offers Gigabit connectivity, officially launched this month. The Newcastle-based supplier says the network is the first solution of its kind to cover a full route in North America.

Besides the high bandwidth, on-board, internet service, the new system will enable Caltrain to connect up such systems as on-board CCTV, train monitoring and up-to-date Passenger Information.

The complex solution covers the entire 51-mile, electrified route and encompasses 63 radio sites across 9 edge switches and Blu Wireless’ 60Ghz trackside radio. WiFi6 and Hotspot 2.0 features make the system future-proof.

Emmanuel Henry, Managing Director, Nomad Digital said “Nomad Digital is very proud to be working with Caltrain to develop an innovative connectivity solution which will support the delivery of the best possible passenger experience. We have been delighted with the results of our testing and look forward to continuing our work with Caltrain over the years.”

On-train WiFi services, trackside wireless networks, the growing market for passenger WiFi and on-board entertainment will be the main subjects of BWCS’ WiFi on Trains Conference this year. www.Traincomms.com
